If you like to do what's "in", then follow the crowd: British Airways has announced its top destinations for August 2011: New York, Orlando, Barbados, Rome, Barcelona, Mauritius, Las Vegas, St Lucia, Venice and Jersey.

Now, if you wanted to avoid lots of people this summer, perhaps you chose to rent a quiet cabin in New Hampshire, tour the churches of Lisbon, or indulged in boutique shopping in Perth. (That's in Australia, in case you didn't know.)

But for those special people who thrive on spending their time and resources helping others, they were busy building houses with Habitat for Humanity or volunteering at an orphanage in Ethiopia, like my sister-in-law did with her 15-year-old daughter.

So, maybe you'll come back from your vacation with memories that will quickly fade. But if you spend your time helping others, you will be rewarded with a sense of great satisfaction and relationships that could last a lifetime.
